Notes
TD-9 is a rich, vibrant expression of some of our favorite Napa Valley vineyards. The name of this Cabernet Sauvignon celebrates John Shafer’s first tractor, a TD-9 International Harvester, which he inherited with the purchase of our property and taught himself to drive in 1973 as part of the founding of the winery.
Nose: Black cherries, black currant, red plum, thyme, rose petal, and cocoa.
Palate: Lush and mouth-filling with flavors of black cherries, black currants, red plum, thyme, and rose petal.
Finish: Long and satisfying with subtle notes of cocoa and tannins.
Blend: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec
Pairing
Grilled or Roasted Red Meat: A classic pairing, the wine's bold flavors complement the richness of red meat. Think grilled ribeye, roasted lamb, or a hearty beef stew.
Aged Cheeses: The wine's tannins can handle the boldness of aged cheeses like aged cheddar, Gouda, or blue cheese.
Wild Game: The wine's complexity pairs well with the earthy flavors of wild game like venison or duck.
Spicy Foods: The wine's acidity can balance the heat of spicy dishes, like Indian curries or Szechuan cuisine.
Dark Chocolate: The wine's dark fruit flavors and tannins complement the bitterness of dark chocolate.
93-Points James Suckling
Dried cherries, blackcurrants, chocolate, sweet licorice, anisette and hints of moist earth on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, refined and velvety with a softer, powdery tannin structure. Attractive core of ripe black fruit with a lingering finish.
92-Points Wine Enthusiast
The first vintage where they've put Cabernet Sauvignon on the label, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon TD-9 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, raised all in new barrels. Medium ruby/purple-hued, it has a killer nose of caramelized red and black fruits as well as lead pencil, dried flowers, and toasty oak. It's balanced, medium to full-bodied, and just about impossible to resist. There are roughly 10,000 cases produced, and it's a wine readers will love over the coming decade.hrough 2030.
History
In 1972 John and Bett Shafer, both nearing the age of 50, decided to roll the dice on the promise of a new life in California. They’d raised four children in Hinsdale, Illinois, a comfortable, tree-lined suburb of Chicago. John was an executive at the publishing firm, Scott Foresman, while Bett had been running a house filled with four very active kids, their friends, and various pets. Now two of their children were in college, a third, Doug, was in the later half of high school, and their youngest was in middle school.
Both restless and energetic, John and Bett were ready for something new.
It was John’s idea to explore the wine business in California, which he believed was on the verge of taking off. He made several exploratory trips to areas in the Golden State known for growing grapes and making wine. In late 1972 when he found an ideal hillside vineyard in a distant farming community called Napa Valley, Bett was ready to go.
As Shafer Vineyards expanded and flourished in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with the heavy lifting of launching the family business largely done, Bett stepped away to pursue other interests. John Shafer stayed involved in day-to-day operations through his mid-90s.
Everyone at Shafer has the unflagging, adventurous, and enterprising spirit of Bett and John Shafer to thank for the winery, vineyards, and the wines that exist today. Their sense of adventure and approach to life, business, family, and friends continues to inspire everything we do.
