Olianas Cannonau di Sardegna 2021
Olianas Cannonau di Sardegna has an intense ruby red color. The mouthfeel is fresh, with a good structure and dense, well-integrated tannin texture, and floral and fruity notes on the nose. Distinctive hints of wild berry combine splendidly with notes of dark chocolate and tobacco. A good concentration of tannins, finely balanced by a pleasing acidity, lingers on the palate.
Cannonau, also known as Grenache, is Sardinia’s main red wine. It's high in antioxidants, especially flavonoids, which are linked to better heart health. People in Sardinia traditionally consume Cannonau in moderation, often with meals and shared with loved ones. While there isn't a direct cause-and-effect proven between Cannonau and living longer, some theories suggest it contributes to the overall healthy lifestyle in Sardinia.
Nose: Aromas of cherries, plums, even blackberry or currant. Hints of to baking spices like clove and nutmeg.
Palate: Full-bodied, with notes of red and black fruit, spice, earth, and leather: These flavors will echo the aromas you picked up on the nose, but may come across slightly differently.
Finish: Long: The flavors should linger on your palate for a noticeable amount of time after you swallow.
Pairing
Grilled meats: Ribeye steak, lamb chops, sausages - The richness of the wine can stand up to the grilled flavors and fat content.
Roasted vegetables: Root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, and butternut squash can handle the weight of the wine, especially when roasted with herbs.
Hearty stews and braises: Beef bourguignon, short rib stew, Birria - The slow-cooked flavors marry well with the wine's complexity, and the tannins can help cut through the richness.
Sardinia
Sardinia whispers of a life well-lived. Sun-drenched vineyards hug the rugged coastline, producing wines as bold and captivating as the island itself. Cannonau, a native grape, weaves its magic into robust reds hinting of spice and earth, while Vermentino grapes sing of the sea in crisp, mineral-rich whites. Sip a glass, breathe in the fresh Mediterranean air, and feel the worries of the world melt away. Here, amidst ancient olive groves and timeless traditions, Sardinia offers a toast to both the bounty of the vine and the simple pleasures of a life well-balanced.
Sardinia is considered one of the world's five "Blue Zones," regions known for people living exceptionally long lives. Estimates suggest an average life expectancy in Sardinia around 83 years old, which is higher than the European average of 80.1 years old.
It's worth noting that these are averages, and some Sardinians live much longer. The island is particularly famous for the high number of centenarians, people living past 100.
A Mediterranean diet, strong family bonds, and a non-sedentary lifestyle, likely play a pivotal role in the longevity of Sardinians. Cannonau may also be part of the picture, but even if you aren’t drinking your wine in moderation for its health benefits: this is just a delicious no-brainer of a wine.
