Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Sourced principally from our five family estates in Yountville, our 2020 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon displays red cherry, baked strawberry, and vanilla aromas with hints of fig and coffee bean. This medium-to-full bodied wine showcases a rich mix of berry, chocolate, and buttery caramel flavors set against a backdrop of toasted oak; all leading to a seamless, long finish of currant, blueberry, and warm oak.
Nose: Red cherry, baked strawberry, vanilla, with hints of fig and coffee bean.
Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with a rich mix of berry, chocolate, and buttery caramel flavors. These flavors are set against a backdrop of toasted oak.
Finish: Seamless and long, with notes of currant, blueberry, and warm oak.
So, you can expect a fruity and slightly sweet aroma with some toasty undertones, followed by a full-bodied taste that's rich with fruit, chocolate, and caramel, all balanced by the oak. The finish should be smooth and lingering with continued fruit and oak flavors.
Pairing
Red meat is a no-brainer. Grilled steaks, braised short ribs, roast lamb, or even a juicy burger would all be excellent choices. The bold tannins in the wine can stand up to the richness of the meat.
A slow-cooked beef stew or a hearty chili will be delicious with this Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine's fruitiness will complement the savory flavors of the stew, while the tannins will cut through the richness.
Earthy portobello mushrooms or a creamy mushroom risotto can also be a surprising and delightful pairing with Cabernet Sauvignon. The earthy flavors of the mushrooms will complement the wine's undertones.
Asian Dishes: Don't be afraid to experiment with Asian cuisine! A Peking duck or a flavorful Korean BBQ would be a great match for this wine. The sweetness and spice in these dishes can balance out the tannins in the wine.
This is a wonderfully versatile Cabernet, and can be paired with an endless number of cuisines.
History
While known in his time as a pioneering visionary, it is doubtful that even Charles Krug could have foreseen how the humble winery he founded in 1861 would forever alter the American wine landscape. The ambitious Prussian immigrant transformed 540 acres of prime Napa Valley land that came to him through marriage to Carolina Bale, into the valley’s very first winery. Years later, another immigrant family ̶̶ the Mondavis from Italy ̶̶ would begin their own chapter at Charles Krug, rising to become the “first family” of American wine.
