The Meletti Anisette was invented and produced for the first time in 1870 by Silvio Meletti. He perfected and improved an aniseed based liquor produced by hand in his mother's small shop. He wanted to make liquor that was of high quality and had to stand up to competition. He selected a high quality aniseed (Pimpinella Anisum) to receive its characteristic flavor.
