Maker's Mark is renown among those who do and don't drink it because of its package. Each bottle is turned upside down and hand-dipped in red wax, which leaves the mouth and neck of each bottle uniquely coated and sealed. Maker's Mark is distilled from winter wheat, barley, and aged in charred white oak barrels. As Michael Jackson, the uber-sot puts it in his The World Guide to Whisky,
''The defining smoothness is achieved, arguably, at the expense of some flavor because Maker's Mark eschews rye in favor for wheat with which to season the palate. This is an accepted alternative way of producing bourbon but few distillers pursue it; Old Fitzgerald is a notable example.''
Sublimely sweet, ambrosial bouquet that features vanilla, chocolate fudge, buttermilk and hazelnut. On the palate, it's impeccably balanced; rich, mature flavors of tobacco leaves, caramel, red fruit and pine come together elegantly on the tongue. Aftertaste offers dark caramel and sweet pipe smoke. Best Buy.
Spirit Journal Rating: 4 Stars/Highly Recommended
Red winter wheat is the flavoring grain of Maker's Mark®. It allows the bourbon to sit on the forward pallet of the tongue. Traditional bourbons use rye for their flavoring.
The base aroma is buttered corn-on-the-cob with aeration bringing additional scents of vanilla and cinnamon. The palate entry showcases sweet breakfast cereal grain; at midpalate the corn dominates so thoroughly that you know that this could only be one of the best straight bourbons from Kentucky. Ends spirity and heated. One of America’s benchmark spirits. - Paul
